PUPIL HEALTH AND WELLBING DEPARTMENT

The School employs specialist medical, counselling and pastoral staff to promote the health and wellbeing of our pupils. These colleagues work closely with the Pastoral and Safeguarding teams of teaching staff in each of our schools so that we can offer the highest quality of care for pupils and appropriate advice and support for families, in conjunction with external agencies and safeguarding partners.

The School’s Safeguarding and Pastoral Care teams include the Senior Leadership teams in the Pre-Prep and Junior Schools and, in the Senior School, the Heads of Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form, in addition to the School Chaplain, Heads of House and Heads of Year. Other key senior staff in the Senior School include the Deputy Head (Pupils’ Personal Development and Employability), the Deputy Head (Academic), and the SEND Department.

THE ROLE

The Wellbeing Practitioner is a key and integral member of the wellbeing team, acting as the link between the wellbeing team and the wider school community (staff, pupils and parents). They will work directly with pupils responding to and improving pupils’ emotional wellbeing needs as well as working closely with the network around the child, where needed. The wellbeing practitioner will report to the Director of Pupil Wellbeing and will work with the school pastoral staff to support the Deputy Head Pastoral and Lead DSL with referrals to outside services including Social Care, and liaison with outside services to best support young people and families. In addition, they will work with parents where appropriate to improve their confidence in building their own and their children’s resilience.

THE SCHOOL

A culture of community, kindness and belonging

Highgate is a different kind of independent school.  We are a school whose charitable ethos is an inextricable part of both staff and pupil DNA. Highgate doesn’t exist in a bubble, but is connected to, and part of, a community. We have partnerships with over 60 state schools across 7 London boroughs, and, in 2017, Highgate co-founded the free sixth form school, The London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (LAET), with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as principal business sponsor.

From the Pre-Prep right up to the Sixth Form, we are actively seeking to embed a real sense of belonging at Highgate. Everyone who works and studies with us deserves to feel they are part of an environment that:

·         welcomes them

·         enables them to be themselves

·         understands them

·         encourages questioning, self-knowledge, and self-expression

·         helps them not just to manage, but to thrive, to discover and pursue their passions, and to develop as individuals and members of a community

To do this, we are evaluating diversity in our professional, curricular and co-curricular life, exploring how to attract pupils and staff from all backgrounds to work and learn at Highgate and providing opportunities to share our own experiences as well as learning from alternative perspectives. Our work on inclusion at Highgate involves pupils, staff, alumni, parents and carers.
